Majuli and the Mising way of life

Known for its pristine beauty, lush greenery, and vibrant cultural life, Majuli is home to diverse communities who live in deep harmony with nature.

Among them are the Mising tribe, one of the largest indigenous communities of Assam. In Mising households, weaving is not just a craft — it is a way of life. Almost every home has a loom, and generations of women have carried forward this tradition, creating textiles that reflect identity, resilience, and artistry.

Behind the beauty of Majuli is a fragile reality. Over time, women came together, built confidence, and began envisioning a future where they could own and lead their enterprises.

Yet, behind this beauty lies a fragile reality. Every year, Majuli faces devastating floods during the peak of monsoons. Meanwhile, its remote geographical location severely limits access to markets, infrastructure, and opportunities. For women farmers and artisans, this unfortunately means limited income despite hard work, poor access to fair markets, loss of livelihoods due to floods and a lack of collective bargaining power for their produce.

To address these challenges, Ayang Trust began working closely with women in Majuli — focusing on strengthening livelihoods, building local leadership, and creating access to resources.

Over the years, women came together, built confidence, and started envisioning a future where they could own and lead their enterprises. With support from philanthropic organizations, CSR partners, and individuals, this vision began to take shape.

Today, Lékopé is more than a producer company — it is a movement. It is organising women farmers and artisans into collectives, enabling production of high-quality, natural products like mustard oil and handloom textiles, connecting remote communities to markets, and is actively working towards building women-led enterprises and leadership.

Lékopé work has now expanded beyond Majuli, supporting women’s collectives across Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

The Birth of Lekope

In December 2022, this collective dream became a reality with the formation of Lékopé Majuli Women Farmer Producer Company Ltd.

“Lékopé” means “coming together” in the Mising language — a reflection of its spirit. What began with the leadership of one woman and around 100 members has today grown into a powerful collective of over 5,000 women producers, working across Majuli and beyond.
